2014 BETTER HALF
Better Half was inspired by a tale of two lovers who were brought together by fate and bonded by their undeniable chemistry and journey through life. A reflection of this perfect match is the pairing of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. On their own, each are equally enticing, but united, something magical happens.
Better Half displays the best characteristics from both the lovely, plush and aromatic Cabernet Franc and the deep, bold, and inviting Cabernet Sauvignon. Rich layers of crimson red color and a blushing aura, immediately draw you in. Delight in aromas of dried fig, damson plum, raspberries, mocha and toffee brittle with delicate notes of pink peppercorn, cardamom, and violets. The flavors are an enticing tango between the two varietals with blackberries, bright cherries, baker’s chocolate, ginger snaps and crushed slate. Medium-full body with firm, velvety tannins and deep dark fruit indicates this wine will be divinely decadent now and will evolve into even a more integrated and complex wine with age.
Winemaking & Vineyard Notes:
For Jim Close, it is all about balance, complexity, and the special moments as you experience the wine. Wine that can be savored and remembered. An experience that lingers in your mind, and leaves an impression on your soul. It begins, as you might expect, in the vineyard. Each vineyard site offers its own personality and specific character. This carefully selected fruit is thoughtfully blended together, creating a multi-faceted, intriguing marriage, showcasing the best of each individual vineyard, while forming a sum greater than its parts.
MADE CAREFULLY FROM VINE TO WINE
Careful selections of vines are made and nurtured until harvested, to the finest detail; limiting yield for optimal flavor development, careful pruning and managing the canopy for even sun exposure and ripeness. Each vineyard is harvested separately at the optimum time. When that moment arrives and all things are in balance; the flavors, the acids and the tannins, then we pick and the anticipation of perfection begins. Once in the winery, each cluster of fruit is gently destemmed, each berry then selected or rejected. We then begin the fermentation process, gently turning sugar to alcohol with fermentations at 80 deg F, cooler than many wines made in Napa Valley. These cooler temperatures help us create wine with beautiful flavors full of intricate nuances. Elegance and complexity trumps power in our opinion.
